Last night, Estevan residents gathered for the Courage & Community Dinner, put on for the second year in a row by the Estevan Community Wellness Committee.

The supper featured a 50/50 by the Estevan Public Youth Centre and a speech from Tyler Smith, a survivor of the Humboldt Broncos bus crash and winner of Amazing Race Canada season 9.

Robert Godfrey, a member of the Estevan Community Wellness Committee, says the event, which sold out, was quite the sight.

“This was the second annual event, and it was really awesome to see. Last year’s event went really well, and we had a full house then, and tonight was the same, another great full house of people, and it sold out really quickly, which was super exciting to see for Estevan Community Wellness.”

“What I think was one of the best parts of tonight was just seeing how everyone in the room was so happy to be here. They loved the message that our speaker, Tyler Smith, gave, and today is all about bringing people together. It’s about spreading a positive message, and it feels like a very successful night.”

Many tables were bought by local companies, with Godfrey saying they gave local organizations the opportunity to attend.

“One of the things that was really important about putting this event on was making sure that it was accessible to as many people in our community as possible. A lot of times with events like this, price can be an issue with people getting to come to these events, and so there were two things that made this event really possible to have as many people here in the community as we could.”

“One was that we kept ticket prices low, but the other part of that was through great local businesses who bought tables, and then with that they donated those back so that those tables could be given to local organizations so they could have members of their clubs and committees come and be a part of this event.”

With the second annual dinner in the books, Godfrey says he’s already looking forward to hopefully holding it again next year.

“I think this is definitely an event that is going to be a great thing for the community of Estevan. I think it’s something that we can look forward to happening for many years to come. I think there are so many different things that could happen with it, but at the end of the day, having a night when we can get together, have a great inspirational speaker, and just enjoy the community is always going to be a win, so I think it’s a great reason to keep doing this every year.”

Godfrey thanked all of the local businesses and volunteers who were able to support the event and make it happen.
